Riverbed Solidifies Commitment to Federal Market With Security Standards Compliance Certifications

Riverbed Cascade Successfully Completes Rigorous Federal Test Assessments; Application-Aware Network Performance Management Solution Addresses Key Federal Mandates with Security Standards Compliance

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/22/12 -- Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the performance company, today announced a reinforced commitment to the federal market with delivery of critical assessment and validation for its Cascade® application-aware network performance management (NPM) solutions that support requirements of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) customers, civilian government agencies, and many private sector companies. This new release, Cascade 9.6, meets the testing requirements of the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC), a military organization under the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), and achieved Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) and the Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) validations. In addition, Cascade 9.6 reached EAL3+ Evaluation Status under the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation and Certification Scheme (CCS). With Cascade 9.6, Riverbed® addresses the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI) and Cloud First policy by delivering end-to-end network visibility into the performance of business-critical applications for proactive alerting, network troubleshooting, and discovery and dependency mapping -- all needed elements for infrastructure consolidation or a migration to the cloud.

Federal CIOs face a unique set of challenges to provide security and manage network performance, and the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 requires agencies to develop plans for securing information and systems. Riverbed underwent the federal testing and evaluation process in order to comply with the requirements of DoD customers. These certifications provide independent third-party assurance that Riverbed complies with the highest standards of security in its products and helps government agencies to expedite the purchasing process by limiting, or in some cases, eliminating the need for the DoD and its partners to endure lengthy interoperability and assurance testing.

Security concerns are driving the adoption of application-aware NPM technologies that include network behavioral analytics for real-time anomaly detection. With the Riverbed Cascade product family, government agencies can effectively increase the protection of network infrastructure and applications with proactive alerting and reporting on changes to baseline performance. Cascade products enable real-time, end-to-end visibility into the performance of critical applications by integrating deep packet and flow analysis for proactive alerting and network troubleshooting. Cascade products combine -- into a single elegant dashboard -- simultaneous packet and flow data with discovery and dependency mapping, which are critical for consolidation, disaster recovery (DR), and cloud migration projects.

"Civilian, military, and intelligence agencies and departments are facing new IT mandates with the goal to increase the efficiency of their services and operations," said Martin Bentz, president and founder at Clearshark. "Government agencies must select an application-aware network performance management solution that dramatically reduces security risks and eliminates blind spots in physical, virtual, mobile, and cloud environments, as well as meet compliance reporting for requirements such as NIST/FISMA, DISA, STIGs, and other regulations. Riverbed Cascade products deliver end-to-end visibility of the network and application performance for our federal customers."

Cascade Products Provide Critical Government Certifications
FIPS is a universal procurement requirement for the federal government and DoD. In the government market, applications and products associated with the communication of sensitive data must meet FIPS requirements. With Cascade 9.6, Cascade products offer certification for FIPS 140-2 Level 1 validation.

Cascade 9.6 also supports applicable STIGs for hardening and vulnerability assessments to protect a system from unauthorized access by minimizing network-based attacks and preventing system access when the attacker is present at the device. In addition, the Cascade 9.6 evaluation status for Common Criteria EAL3+, under the Canadian Communications Security Establishment's (CSE) Common Criteria Evaluation and CCS, provides an independent review of a product's security and development practices security features. The investment by Riverbed in these evaluations demonstrates the company's commitment to providing the highest level of information assurance to its customers and partners.

"This latest set of test validation and testing certification for Cascade further solidifies the commitment by Riverbed to the federal market," said William Hartwell, area vice president, federal, at Riverbed. "Hundreds of government organizations worldwide turn to Riverbed for help in meeting the most demanding IT goals in serving the needs of the citizens, achieving mission targets, and supporting warfighters."

Achieving certification for Cascade products builds upon the strong wide area network (WAN) optimization base with the Riverbed Steelhead® product family deployed broadly in data centers and branch offices. Riverbed has a footprint throughout the federal government, and as a result government network managers can now enhance their IT performance management strategies with an easy-to-deploy, cost-effective, end-to-end visibility solution that meets stringent regulations.

To comply with the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI) and the Cloud First policy, government agencies are consolidating their data centers, developing a cloud environment, and centralizing at least three IT services. As a first step to meeting the IT mandates, government agencies use Riverbed Cascade products for complete network visibility to quickly map IT assets and applications, and their dependencies, reducing the risk of network outages during consolidation of infrastructure or a migration to the cloud. As a second step, agencies use the Riverbed Steelhead product family to manage and optimize the network connection and accelerate application performance in the cloud and over the WAN. Cascade 9.6 can analyze the behavior and interaction of users with applications, systems, and devices across the environment and deliver actionable, real-time information, helping government agencies improve performance and security with smarter decision-making and faster, easier problem diagnosis.
