Opera Chief Out

Browser pioneer has dumped its co-founder and CEO Jon von Tetzchner

Opera has dumped its co-founder and CEO Jon von Tetzchner in favor of its chief commercial officer Lars Boilesen.

The company says von Tetzchner, who’s run Opera since 1995, will continue to serve in a full-time strategic and independent capacity.

It did not offer a reason, which is widely believed to be connected with Opera’s $2.1 million third-quarter loss on lower-than-expected revenues though the company denies it.

In a statement von Tetzchner claimed the decision was based on a “lengthy consideration process.”

Boilesen ran Opera sales between 2000 and 2005 then did a stint as CEO of Alcatel-Lucent’s Nordic and Baltic region only to return to Opera at von Tetzchner’s behest a year ago.

Opera successfully complained to the European Commission about Microsoft’s bungling of its Internet Explorer browser with Windows and will now get to hitch a ride on the so-called Ballot Screen Microsoft agreed to disseminate in Europe.
